Okay, so actually the first part of this song was the last thing written for the album, also in fall 2009. But I didn't know exactly how to end it. I had this chord progression I wrote in the dorms at Santa Clara in 1999. I tried to turn it into a song dozens of times, but it never really worked out. For some reason, the hanging chord at the end of the new song just begged for it. So that riff finally got its moment, ten years later! I knew for sure it was right when my friend from our former college band came over and was listening to the new song, with guitar in hand. Right before the moment where I had put the riff, he looked over at me with a strange look, we paused...and BOTH busted it out, loud as hell, laughing. He knew! Ten years later he still knew the riff and knew it went there. Priceless. So it's the newest and oldest song, I guess.
lyrics
GOING AWAY
It's not gonna be easy, I know/I'm going away/And I won't be afraid, I know/It's not going to be easy, I know/I'm going away/And I won't be afraid/Anymore/Well I told myself I wasn't good for you/And I walked right out that door/But when I saw your face in my memory/I knew I'd be back for more/Well if you saw me now/I have no doubt/You couldn't pull me off the floor/'Cause there's nothing left of me.
